    Kildalton Cross

Erected over 1,200 years ago, the Kildalton Cross holds the rare distinction of still standing in its original location. Excavations reveal an even earlier cross-slab was present on the site, indicative of an established Christian presence there.

The cross, skillfully carved from grey-green chlorite schist - a notably hard local stone - exemplifies the masterful craftsmanship of its era. The working of such a stone would have presented a considerable challenge, but its durability has proven to be a boon, contributing to the cross's impressive state of preservation.
